Clinical Standards, Not Political Standards

The Medical Council of New Zealand is consulting on new draft standards that would require doctors to adopt specific ideological positions relating to race, “privilege,” and interpretations of the Treaty of Waitangi as part of their professional recertification.

This goes far beyond ensuring respectful care. Every New Zealander agrees doctors must treat patients with dignity and without discrimination. That is already the law. It is already required under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act.

But the new draft standards move from regulating conduct to regulating belief. Doctors would be required to affirm particular political theories about “power structures” and commit themselves to activist-style “system change” as part of their professional obligations.

Medical care should be based on clinical need, evidence, and professional judgment, not political doctrine. Regulators exist to ensure safety and competence. They do not exist to require professionals to adopt contested political views as a condition of earning a living.
