Defence Fund: Defend Don Brash. Defend Free Debate.

Matthew Hooton publicly accused Dr Don Brash of dishonestly promoting his views on the Treaty to deliberately create racial division. He described Don as a "fundamentally bad person" and made other serious allegations against both Don and Hobson's Pledge.

Those claims were false. Matthew Hooton later apologised. Yet despite acknowledging he went too far, Hooton is now asking the courts to stop the case from ever reaching trial.

This case is also about protecting every New Zealander's right to participate in debates about race relations, the Treaty, and the future of our country without being smeared as racist, dishonest, or motivated by hate. Democracies depend on robust disagreement. They cannot function if people are intimidated into silence by personal attacks and defamatory accusations.

Your support has already made an enormous difference. Thanks to generous supporters, Don has successfully resisted repeated attempts to have this case struck out before trial. The Court of Appeal has now heard the latest appeal and reserved its decision.

The fight is not over.

Please help us continue defending Don's reputation and the principle that New Zealanders should be free to speak honestly about the issues facing our country without being defamed for doing so.
